2009 Youth and
Junior Riders
Above is a photo from our Sunday
Youth & Juniors session. Riders
9 to 11, and a couple teens. We had
an “Under 11 Girls” race
with 7 riders, and a “10 Yr Old
Boys” race with 10 riders.
We will have 16 sessions by the end
of this month. Attendance typically
12 to 16 riders, and as high as 28.
We mentor riders from 9 yr old 1st
timers, to several who have been with
us for three seasons.
The program is for girls and boys
to realize confidence… gained
by accomplishing riding drills and
mock races. We try to have fun. We
don’t work so much on speed,
except every kid will ask, “What
was my time?” Just having kids
ride is teaching motor skills and reactions.
We practice over-the-cone, fence starts,
ribbon-ride, leap-frog, pace-line,
attacks, slow-n-go, stop-starts, water-fights,
and follow-the-leader. Saturday we
ran our special-once-a-year-drill… backwards
on the track!
Thanks to the NVCA, Medtronic Foundation,
Cupertino Bike Shop, Rock Tape, and
other individuals for donations.
Thanks to assistant coaches Rich
Hill and Greg Kleiman of Los Gatos
BRC, John Cheetham of Metromint,
Steve Jones of Alto Velo, and all
parents who chip in. Also to Andrew
Lanier of San Jose BC and Rob Jensen
of Los Gatos BRC for working with
older juniors. Thanks to the small
army of volunteers and riders at
the track who keep up the momentum!
Respectfully,
