Saturday, April 12, 2008

Summer has arrived! It was very warm at the track for this month's sprints, and 39 people showed up - most ever. People were also going pretty fast for April with many PR's and seven riders going under 12.0 for their 200.

The group was led off by Shawn Hatfield with 11.75, followed by Matias Elgert, Steve Peleaz and Terry Tennette, all at 11.80. Shawn didn't race because of allergy problems, so Matias moved into the top seed spot.

The riders were split into groups of six, based on 200 meter times, like last month, and everyone raced everyone else in their group in a round robin format. Most everyone did three 2 ups and one 3 up.

Anne and would like to thank everyone who came down to race. You guys all raced hard and we had fun helping out. I can't think of a better way to spend four hours on a beautiful afternoon.

Here are the 200 meter times

March 2008 Sprint Tournament 3/16/08

A good time was had by all at the opening sprint tournament of 2008 on a VERY windy Sunday afternoon. 32 riders braved the gusts at Hellyer to start the season with a bang.

Matias Elgart set the 200 meter tt bar with a Hellyer PR of 11.86 seconds. He was closely followed by Giovanni Rey at 11.98 and Tor Roberts with a 12.09.

The biggest surprise of the day was Peter Bohl coming down to help out after being ill for a month or so. He looked great and it was wonderful seeing his smiling face again. Welcome back Peter

After the 200's we broke the racers into groups of six base on their 200m times. Racing with riders you're own speed is a lot more fun and also works better as a learning experience. We'll probably do at least one more sprint day with this format before we move into a real tournament format with elimination brackets and reps. Stay tuned.

Sprint Tournament 8/3/07

A medium sized group of 18 sprinters braved the heat at the track this past Saturday to vie for the fast rider bragging rights. A couple of PR's and great racing completed the sprint series for this year.

After the 200's for seeding we started with a one ride, three up for everyone. The winners moved on to complete the tournament with best 2 of 3, two ups. The final came down to #1 seed Tim Montagne and #2 seed Matias Elgart. They both voted to do a single ride for the win, so we ran a three lap race instead of the regular two. In a very close race, Matias just nipped Tim at the line. Great racing!

Everyone who was eliminated from the main tournament moved into consolation rounds, sprinting six or more times until all were pooped. Also great racing!

Thanks to everyone who raced or helped out, especially Anne without whom these races wouldn't happen.

Tim Montagne had to leave after the 200's so Keith MacBeth became the top seed.

SPRINT SUNDAY 3/4/07

SPRINT SUNDAY 3/4/07

On a very nice (can you say warm for a March day) Sunday morning we had a sprint semi-tournament. It was a semi-tournament because after everyone did a flying 200m for seeding, we broke into groups of six based on those 20om times so that everyone would be sprinting against riders their own speed. Because of that format, we really didn't have an overall winner, but there was some really good sprinting for this early in the season.

After the Match Sprints, those who were so inclined did 500m TT's, followed by several Team Sprints. Results are below.

With construction at the track starting on Monday, 3/5, this may be the last racing at Hellyer until June. Even if the track is open on the weekends for the next several months, this was the end on an era in terms of the present physical facility, so the sprinting was a great way to to say goodbye.

As an even better farewell was the sight of almost 30 young juniors on the track after the sprint racing ended. A good portent for the future of of Hellyer.
